How working days are counted

Every Monday to Friday between the two dates counts as a working day, unless it is a public holiday or a weekday off in lieu of a holiday that fell on a weekend. Saturdays and Sundays never count. Easter Monday moves each year with Easter, which is worked out from the date of the first full moon after the spring equinox.

Example. October 2026 has 31 days, of which 9 are Saturdays and Sundays. The October bank holiday is Mon 26 October, which leaves 21 working days. Five working days after Wed 23 December is Mon 4 January, because the Christmas and New Year holidays are skipped.

Days marked "in lieu" are the weekdays that banks, the public service and most employers take off when a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. They are not public holidays in law.

Questions

How many public holidays are there in Ireland?
There are 10 public holidays a year: New Year's Day, St Brigid's Day, St Patrick's Day, Easter Monday, the May, June and August bank holidays, the October bank holiday, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day.
When is the St Brigid's Day bank holiday?
It is the first Monday in February, except when 1 February falls on a Friday, when the holiday is that Friday. It was first held in 2023.
Is Good Friday a public holiday?
No. Good Friday is not a public holiday in Ireland, although banks and some businesses close. This calculator counts it as a working day.
What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?
The holiday stays on that date in law, and there is no automatic right to the next weekday off. Your employer gives you either a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day of pay. In practice, when Christmas Day, St Stephen's Day, New Year's Day or St Patrick's Day falls on a weekend, banks, the public service and most employers close on the next weekday. Turn off "Count days off in lieu" to count those weekdays as working days.
How many working days are there in a year?
In 2026 there are 251 working days in Ireland, counting Monday to Friday and leaving out public holidays and the usual days off in lieu.
Does "add working days" count the start date?
No. Adding 1 working day to a Friday gives the next Monday, or the Tuesday after a bank holiday weekend. Use a minus number to count back from a date.
Does this cover Northern Ireland?
No. Northern Ireland has different bank holidays, including 12 July and the late May and August holidays. This calculator uses the public holidays in the Republic of Ireland.
